Havoc has been playing underground dance music since 1995 and is approaching his 10th year on Dejavu which is quite an accomplishment considering he is still in his 20’s. During his tenure, he has been a prominate part of the history of Dejavu’s rise from one of London’s underground dance music radio stations into becoming a highly-successful internet radio station that it is today. Having survived the mass abandonment of UK Garage, the birth of the ‘crew’ culture in Grime, the temptation to play R&B when almost every dj had switched to playing it simply to ‘murk a dance’, he stuck to his guns by resisting temptation to follow what everyone was doing or do what djs were doing more and more which is to play what was the ‘in’ thing just because everyone else is playing it. This comes with its downsides like everything but this approach to the music he plays has won him mass respect through the music and club industry for keeping true to his roots. During the time when Grime and R&B was quickly saturating the club and radio scene, Havoc was one of a handful of djs in the UK that truly kept the garage flag flying and stopped playing old school on his regular show and concentrated on championing the new and current garage sound which production-wise was better but ultimately didn’t have the club vibe that was a key factor to its success throughout the 90’s. Confident that Garage music will come good again he is very conscious that when it comes back to the fore in a different form, it will not be like it was ‘back in the day’. The list of artist, producers and dj’s that he has been lucky to interview on his show is endless. It includes Jeremy Sylvester, Qualifide, Dubwise, Roll Deep, Newham Generals, J Harvey, Delinquent, Golden Child and the list goes on. Whilst still playing some of the classics in the clubs around the UK and abroad, he prides his show on being able to break through new music first by showcasing the freshest tracks from the UK’s hottest producers every single week. Just some of the tracks that were first aired on his show include Delinquent Feat Kcat (My Destiny), Qualifide (Look Shook, Lego, Badman 1,2,3 & 4), Wookie (Gallium), Housebreakerz (Sex Weed), DMT (Touch You), Xara (You Got Me) to name but a few. Up until recently, Havoc also had a monthly radio show on Galaxy 100–106 that has given him a taste of being a permanent radio fixture on the airwaves. Currently he is involved in a couple of projects which include promoting events and liaising with some of the world’s biggest music labels and was instrumental in the work towards the release of the Taio Cruz single ‘Like A Star. One thing that you can guarantee is that whatever he plays whether it be Funky, Bassline or House, the music he plays will always have a strong garage element that separates him from the rest.
