‘Spartan’ Spooky

As well as playing some wicked Dancehall & Reggae Joe Grime also works on a number of comedy shows, here he is alongside the ACTing UP Cast for a special musical sketch for Hackney Weekend

OK for those that follow me on twitter (@joegrime) you’ll know I haven’t been too impressed by the recently released Summer Wave Riddim, which to me is unneeded; not on the same level as last years anthem bringing Summertime Riddim, nor is it in my opinion even on the same level as BBQ or even Smudge. Now I’m sure through my Twitter conversations that a lot less avid dancehall fan or those that just look for the latest Kartel tune will be loving this riddim and admittedly it even grew on me a little when I listened back to it on this weeks show. My biggest problem with riddims like this is not the fact that they’ve remade a riddim that still gets regular play, nor is it the fact that although artist like Beenie, Popcaan & Gaza Slim do an alright job on the riddim there is no stand out piece.

My biggest problem is the almost instantaneous way DJs, selectors and fans have jumped on the “wave” and leaves me asking the following questions: When are DJs/Selectors going to say enough is enough and exercise some quality control over what they endorse? When will producers stop trying rinse out every forgotten Vybz Kartel acapella they have on their hard drive? And finally when are we going see producers attempt to make riddims firstly for the dancehall rather than radio (it reminds me of the influx of euro pop that has invaded are airwaves in the last couple of years on mainstream radio)

This concept isn’t new and I know from reading a recent interview with Truckback Records Sexx Tape Riddim was built and voiced for the dancehall not radio, but it seems to be happening less and less.

Historically Dancehall & Reggae music has always been championed by sounds in dances, and radio would pick up on a tune from the buzz and although we now leave in a world of on demand media,where I can listen to what I want when I want it; it would be nice to see producers aiming more for the dancehall rather than radio waves.

Talking about tunes doing huge things in the dance, I have to mention Konshens who has really made an impact so far this year. At my recent MADD RAFF birthday set the walls were literally beaten to a pulp when “Do Sumn” & “Stop Sign” were played.

Stop Sign is a tune I have mentioned before (in my recent piece for Fact Magazine) and when I recently tweeted the open lines it got the biggest amount of Retweets, proving the tunes either a huge track or I have a lot of slack followers. Talking of slackness & a tune that’s aimed at the dancehall rather than radio I have to give a mention to Gappy Ranks “Wine Pon Di Edge”

The tune taken from his “Bedroom Bully” EP is a tune I can see running a lot of dances in the coming months and as you can see the Video seemed like a lot of fun!

Before moving on from the slack, dancehall aimed tracks I have to give mention to the Coolie Gal Riddim, which seems like being a firm dancehall favourite. Surprisingly Tommy Lee is getting a lot of air play (Both on radio & in the Dance) with his track “Let Me Put It In”

although I have to big up Zamunda, an artists I have always loved and feel is underrated for his effort “Gal Army” and of course Popcaan’s title track which are both getting good responses.

Talking about Popcaan he features on the new riddim from Mixpak “Loud Speaker” which is a great, with its up tempo almost soca flavour. Produced by Dre Skull and fetauring some of the finest Caribbean Artist I can see this doing really well. The Machel Montana is the stand out for me but I can see a few more pieces being added in the coming weeks and months including a Joe Grime Refix for sure!

Next up I need to give UK its props for a number of reasons. Firstly because in last few months the level of UK dancehall has gone through the roof, especially when you look at the new Ragga Ragga CD which is filled heavily with UK anthems form Stylo G, Gappy Ranks & Lea-anna. I also have to big up the UK because alongside the established artists, the next set of artists have really been bringing some heat!

For those that listen to my show you will have heard me play the Suncycle produced Kick Out Teeth Riddim for some time (The Ladychann & Durrty Goodz being my fav) well good friend and all round wicked artist Fresharda has recently jumped on the riddim on a remix of Tenza’s Out & Clean and I have to say Fresh really did up the levels, I never played the original but with Fresharda’s feature its put it up there with Chann & Goodz.

Talking of UK, Afterhours have been pushing their own brand of dancehall well for the last 9 months, with Deejay Fingers behind the music and big artists such as Don Andre, Big Chainz & UKG legend Kele Le Roc all featured on his riddims I really predict big things for them! If you downloaded my mix for Dont Watch That TV you would of heard “Too Mix Up” (personally my favourite After Hours Tune) and with the new single with Kele Le Roc “One Man” out now, plus a number of up and coming riddims ready for release you would be well advised to keep your eyes peeled.

Talking of Don Andre he appears on the New Hot Coffee Music Release Throw Me Herb, a riddim dedicated to all things Ganja. The riddim features notable tunes from Don, Gappy Ranks & Reddman with Busy Signal leading with his Ganja Tune “Hot Head”

This moves me nicely into mentioning 2 of the biggest reggae albums released this year, Busy Signal’s Reggae Music again & Romain Virgo The System. Let’s start with Busy’s Reggae Music again, the album is a great advertisment for all thats been good with reggae music! He has brung together some of Jamaica’s best musicians for it and by recording it at the legendary Tuff Gong Studios the album really brings together all the modern wordplay you would expect from Busy with the musicanship of legendary labels such as Penthouse & of course Tuff Gong. It’s hard to single out favourite tunes from the album, as the album for me should be viewed as whole. I will however mention Royal Night, a masterclass in innuendo, using a classic lovers formula laced with just the right amount tongue in cheek slackness.

Moving on to another Shane Brown produced album, I write with great pleasure how much I enjoyed Romain Virgo’s the system (It’s Been on constant play in my car since I got it). The album itself is a great mix of Reality & Lovers tunes put togther with an almost mixtape feel (the tracks flow seamlessly through the album). The album kicks off with some great reality with my stand out “Another Day Another Dollar” and also features “Dem A Coward” which I personally feel has the potential and potency to be a future Dub Plate anthem. Its when I get to track 11 (Fantasize) that I get most excited. This track reminds me of classic Sanchez and with album being heavily produced by Penthouse, you get that classic 90′s reggae feel.

Having started writing this by moaning about Summer Wave, it’s nice to finish talking about something so positive. I think we have covered at lot here, and it’s contrasting that for all the up and coming producers making dancehall it’s established & legendary producers who are still putting the majority of quality albums out. DJ Fearney: Lianne, welcome to Déjà vu FM dot com! A little bit of background information for those that don’t really know, you’re obviously born in Hackney, London…

Lianne: Nope. No, I wasn’t born in Hackney…

DJ Fearney: Really?! So where were you born?

Lianne: I was born in Tooting at St.George’s Hospital.

DJ Fearney: Oh ok, so do you live in Hackney now?

Lianne: I live in Hackney now yes.

DJ Fearney: Singer, Songwriter, Musician. You’ve toured with Paloma Faith, is that right?

Lianne: I used to be her backing singer, but I didn’t go on tour, I did some regional stuff with her though, went around the country and went to some European things but I never did a proper tour with her.

DJ Fearney: So you’re now on tour with Bombay Bicycle Club and signed to Warner Brothers, is that correct?

Lianne: Yep it is.

DJ Fearney: Wow! So it’s all going on, big big things. You’re EP is dropping as well – Lost and Found. Is that right?

Lianne: It’s a single. I did have my first EP was called – Lost & Found but this is the first stand alone single which features 2 unheard tracks and 2 remixes.

DJ Fearney: So what are the unheard tracks?

Lianne: One is a song called ‘Liar’ and the other is a song called ‘Empty’ and they’re just kind of part of the Lost and Found package.

DJ Fearney: Written about someone you didn’t have a good memory of or a bad experience?

Lianne: Oh I dunno, just a few things…

DJ Fearney: Ok, right, if you had to describe your sound in 5 words, what would you say?

Lianne: Erm, could guitar based be 1?

DJ Fearney: Yep

Lianne: Ok what about electric guitar based?!

DJ Fearney: You’re pushing it!

Lianne: Ok, I’d say, electric guitar based, blues influenced, soul music.

DJ Fearney: Ok, you done well! You talk about soul, Jill Scott is an inspiration for you, if you had to name a UK inspiration who would it be?

Lianne: A UK inspiration, probably Laura Marling.

DJ Fearney: She’s quite young as well…

Lianne: Yeah, I was listening to her first album a couple of years ago and it was the first album actually that made me cry. I love her voice and I just think she’s  an amazing siren that’s been sent here from somewhere else!

DJ Fearney: Have you met her and got really starstruck like “oh it’s you!”?

Lianne: I have and I was thinking gosh, I better say something interesting because her drummer is my good friend and so he introduced us and I kept thinking gosh, I’ve got to say something. But it turned out alright, I didn’t cry, I was close to it though!

DJ Fearney: The album is coming in July, it’s called “Your Love Big Enough” is that right?

Lianne: “Is Your Love Big Enough” question mark!

DJ Fearney: Ok, I understand! What can people expect from it and will anything that you’ve already put out there on like itunes, be on the album?

Lianne: Yes! So I’ve released 2 EP’s so far, one was the first on “Lost and Found” and the second one was “Forget” and there is going to be 3 tracks from each EP featured on the album and everything else is unreleased. There are some very intimate moments, very thoughtful lyrical moments and then there are some more aggressive sounding songs! There are some really up, happy moments and some sad moments as well so I would say it’s like an eclectic journal of my life and what’s happened in the past couple of years since I’ve been writing it.

DJ Fearney: So where do you get your inspiration from to write all these different songs and different moods?

Lianne: Probably just living life, you know?! Just stuff that happens to all of us. I’d like to think I’ve said what I felt like and it helps me to just talk about it in songs, just make a good thing out of a bad situation perhaps or just express yourself. If you’re feeling happy, why not sing a song about how happy you’re feeling, so I kind of take from everything that’s going on.

DJ Fearney: You had you’re live in LA tape that was out, is that right as well?

Lianne: Yeah, that was like a free EP.

DJ Fearney: And people can still get hold of that can’t they?

Lianne: Yeah if they sign up to the mailing list! You can find that at www.liannelahavas.com

DJ Fearney: What were the crowd like in LA compared to over here? Was it a lot different or did you feel the same energies?

Lianne: Yeah, it’s funny because I’ve been thinking about this, being on tour in the UK you find that the audiences really vary. I went to France yesterday and again different audiences. I played in LA and New York and I dunno, every audience is different. Sometimes a British audience is really rowdy and up for it but sometimes if they’re seated they’re a bit more, relaxed but still supportive. I think generally, if you’re in America, they’ll kind of cheer during the song which is encouraging but it makes me giggle sometimes!

DJ Fearney: You said recently that Jools Holland was always a show you wanted to be on and now you’ve done it, so what else do you want to achieve? What’s the next big milestone?

Lianne: Well, I don’t know. I think I’m quite satisfied, I’m really happy but releasing the album is a big one for me just because it’s been so long in the making and such energy and love has gone into it, so I hope it’s nicely received. I guess playing to the best of my ability and continuing to develop and make more albums in the future.

DJ Fearney: I will definitely be buying it, can’t wait! I have to ask about your hair although you’ve got it out today, it’s usually up and to the left in a bun, talk us through your look. Is it your trademark?

Lianne: Well I dunno! I dunno. I always used to have my natural curls and I used to just have a ponytail like that with a sort of mad fringe and my friend was taking some photos of me one day and I was just getting a bit hot and bothered, so I just placed it up and though oh, I can see my face! So it kinda just stuck and go with various outifts that I wanted to wear and I dunno I just kind of like it coz it’s kind of funky.

DJ Fearney: You’re very young and in a great position, what advice would you give to those who are up and coming and want to be in your position?

Lianne: I’d say, never lose yourself. Always believe in your ability and just make sure you’re being true to yourself musically and just doing what you want to do because it’s normally the purest thing that comes from deep within you. So I’d just say stick to it!

DJ Fearney: Finally, how can people find out more, get in touch and get hold of your EP’s?

Lianne: My single “Lost and Found” came out on the 30^th April which you can get on itunes. I have a website www.liannelahavas.com and I’m on Facebook and Twitter and everything. All my tour dates are listed, come to a show!

Opening the show was Dlux DJ, as people began to arrive the set was already live on air with Joe Grime, Peaches and TDK  hosting the event.

English was the first artist to take to the stage and what an act to open the show. Sporting a t-shirt we both voiced to liking, English had a way with words touching on day to day life. His sound was a combination of Grime, Dub Step and Rap and had us hunting him down for that free EP.

Next on was the lovely Meleka, performing self-confessional songs including “Penny” describing her financial struggle at university in an easy to relate to and creative way. As well as “Apple Tree” written about a guy she really liked. Meleka may be most famous for her funky house tunes but her live sets demonstrate that her musical talent is much more diverse. Her new single “Love You Baby” will be released early in June so do not miss out.

Marie Dahlstrom and her incredible band which included drums, keys, guitars and backing singers, not forgetting a saxophone and trumpet thrown in the loop. On first appearance we definitely weren’t prepared for what we were about to hear as she brought the house down like only this Scandinavian soul singer knows how. Keep on doing your thing because we love it!

Soneni & the Soul With a smile that certainly complimented her hip swinging, bubbly personality, Soneni & her 3 piece band added an upbeat flavour to the evening. Embarrassingly holding the mic to our mouths we politely declined when offered centre stage (our talents need a little work after all :p).  This girl has the voice, style and moves to match, awesome performance.

Obenewa was next to grace the stage, accompanied with a male guitarist. From the moment she opened her mouth she had the crowd gripped with original and familiar tunes. With her cover of “We Found Love” and Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” the room was buzzing, clapping along and singing the familiar lyrics. Our favourite crowd participation moment of the evening by far was the incorporation of Benga & Coki – ‘Night‘ in to her acoustic set and Obenewa had the guys and girls singing their hearts out to the classic dubstep tune. Do do do do do do dooo dooo dooo dooo dooo…

KOF stepped on the stage and instantly every lady in the house felt mesmerised as he began to softly serenade the crowd.  KOF wowed the crowd with his soulful voice and as well as the ladies he definitely had the support of the guys in the room. The last song he performed was ‘Child of the Ghetto’ which is available on itunes and is an incredibly heartfelt song with some really touching lyrics. After the set KOF made a swift exit with his guitarist to make sure he caught the last coach back to his hometown of Liverpool. Make sure you come back again soon!

Introverted performer KaleemTaylor was next to grace the stage, perched on a chair, eyes closed it was almost like you were taking a seat in his front room while he expressed his emotions through song. He is a really humble and quiet guy and I know we’ve said it before, but Kaleem does not realise just how amazing his voice is.

Up next without hesitation was Amplify Dot completely switching up the vibe, bringing out those infamous moves, full of energy, quiff on top form. Dropping some old tunes and “King Kong” from her newest EP she grabbed the attention of everyone present, particularly Peaches who after celebrating her birthday on the night was in full swing, front row shaking what god gave her.
